Ralph Walker, made his reputation on the Barclay-Vesey Building — today One Hundred Barclay — in the roaring ’20s. Since then he has been called "the only other honest architect in America” by Frank Lloyd Wright and named "Architect of the Century" by the American Institute of Architects which awarded him the Centennial Medal of Honor in 1957.

Architecture

Constructed 1923-1927 for the American Telephone Company, One Hundred Barclay became the world’s first skyscraper built in the American Art Deco style. Strong in form and bold in profile, the building’s blunt setback transitions are enunciated by vertical buttress-like piers; its form is softened by intricate ornamentation.

Grand Lobby

It was Emerson, I think, who told us to stop building the sepulchers of our fathers and build our own house. The Barclay-Vesey building is an attempt to build a house of today. A house that is not Greek or Gothic, or Mayan; that looks little to the past, much to the present, and tries to glimpse the future.

Landmark

Originally known as the Barclay-Vesey building, or the New York Telephone Building, One Hundred Barclay was designated a New York City Landmark in 1999. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Today, the original touches have been restored to new grandeur. They can be found in the vibrant overhead murals depicting the history of human communication that line the vaulted Grand Lobby ceilings, and in the intricate and ornate cast bronze detailing that surrounds the elevators.

21st Century

The building’s exterior and main lobby were restored and renovated beginning in 2004; the top 22 floors beginning in 2013. Today, the 33-story building is home to One Hundred Barclay’s seriously spacious loft living, and an eternity of amenities.
